KENNEBUNK- Carol Spalding of Kennebunk, Maine passed away peacefully on November 7, 2023, after a brief illness. She is predeceased by her parents Marion (Macdonald) and Raymond Greenlaw, Harlan Spalding, her husband of 63 years, her sister Floss, brothers Buddy and Malcolm. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her children Gail Henderson, Beverlie Kardulas and her husband John and Donna Kelly, her six grandchildren Ian Vercauteren and wife Jen, Forrest Maynard, Adam Vercauteren and wife Karen, Brie Maynard, and her husband Ash, Alex Kelly and wife Leslie, Samantha Kelly and her husband Alex, and nieces Linda and Laurie and nephew Rob.
She was treasured by her 11 great-grandchildren, Dominic, Taja, River, Anjali, Chloe, Clover, Zandros, Winter, Solla, Marcus and Walker. She is also survived by her step grandchildren Elanna Thomas and husband Jeff, Dan Kardulas and wife Aimee, step great-grandchildren, Cody, Tyler, Noah, Mychaela and Nico.
She was born on August 20, 1929, in Melrose, MA and graduated from Melrose High School in 1947. She worked throughout her life as a secretary, including years as a school secretary at Karachi American School in Karachi, Pakistan, Fairgrounds Elementary School in Nashua, NH and Ogunquit Village School in Ogunquit, ME. She also served as church secretary at the Congregational Church in Wells, ME.
She was a member of the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk for almost 40 years and enjoyed knitting, quilting, puzzles, the ocean, roller coasters and playing board games with her family. Her passion was advocating for political and social causes that she believed in.
She wrote this quote years ago. “What I want for my life is to see my children and grandchildren settled and happy, to have as much time as I can with however many great-grandchildren are born in my lifetime, and to contribute as much as I can to peace, justice, understanding and social awareness."
Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and had a large circle of friends that she enjoyed and valued very much.
Her family would like to thank York Hospital, Sentry Hill, Beacon Hospice, Oasis Senior Advisors and her doctors; Dr. Cote, Dr. Yoo and Dr. Braedon for their care and kindness.
Carol’s legacy will live on by the lives she touched with her gifts of kindness, love and generosity.
A celebration of life will be held at 11am on November 18, 2023 at the First Parish UU, 114 Main St. Kennebunk, ME, at which all are welcome. A reception will be held following the service in the church parish hall. Her burial was held privately. If you desire, a donation may be made in her memory to the First Parish UU Church of Kennebunk or a charity of your choice.
Burial was held at Cedar Brook Burial Ground in Limington.
