Mr. Joseph Paul Madden, a resident of the Pines of Newmarket Assisted Living in Newmarket, New Hampshire - Andover resident since 1975 and beloved husband of Cynthia (Radack) Madden, passed away at his home on Thursday morning, November 2, 2023. He was 91 years old.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he was the beloved son of the late Joseph F. and Ella M. (Nolan) Madden. Mr. Madden was a career US Army veteran, entering the military in January of 1955 and retiring in February of 1975. Joseph earned his Bachelors of Engineering degree at the University of Rhode Island and his Masters of Engineering degree at New York University.
Joseph attained the rank of Lt. Colonel in the US Army and was awarded the Bronze Star for his exemplary service and bravery while serving in Vietnam. Joseph also earned his wings while in the Army and flew many different types of fixed and rotary winged aircraft...including the old Bell 47 M*A*S*H* helicopter - Piasechi CH-21double rotor Workhorse/Shawnee (nicknamed the “flying banana”) helicopter - and the US Army L-19 ‘Bird Dog’ reconnaissance airplane.
Joseph and Cynthia spent more than five years living in Germany while serving a tour of duty for the US Army, and they undertook many adventures traveling throughout Europe. In addition they were stationed at US Army Forts in New York, Texas, South Carolina, Alabama and Maryland. They both spoke fondly of their time in the service of their country.
In civilian life, Joseph was employed as a Senior Vice President of Engineering for Metcalf & Eddy Engineering Services Inc., a firm he worked at for 20 years. He most notably was lead project manager for the Deer Island Waste Water Treatment Plant that services all of Boston and was a huge undertaking resulting in a vastly superior water treatment facility for the city of Boston.
Joe enjoyed working around his home in Andover and West Harwich, taking great care of his properties, as he did everything in his life. Joe also enjoyed the adventure of sword fishing off Block Island as a young man, spending multiple summers working off of the “Lillian B”…harpooning his first swordfish at the age of 15…the bill and harpoon point are still proudly displayed at his home on Cape Cod.
Above all, Joseph was a very devoted husband father and grandfather, nothing was more important than his family. He especially enjoyed caring for his beloved daughter, Elizabeth, who passed away in July, 2020 and took great pride being an active member in the Merrimack Valley Special Needs Community.
Mr. Madden is survived by his wife Cynthia, Sister Nancy, son Christopher, daughter-in-law Serena, Nephews William and Paul, grand-daughters Nichole and Tasha, and great-granddaughter Mila-Bella. Mr. Madden was predeceased by his beautiful daughter Amy in 1966 and his sweet angel Bethy in 2020.
