Obituary

Phyllis Jean Harless
September 11, 1930 – October 25, 2023
Phyllis Jean Harless, 93, passed away following an extended illness on October 25, 2023 at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie.
She was born on September 11, 1930 in Madison County, the daughter of Elmer and Beatrice (Hodson) Rushton. Phyllis graduated from Lapel High School and attended Indiana Business College. She married Jack Norman Harless on September 24, 1950 at Bethany Christian Church.
Phyllis grew up on a farm and learned to be an exceptional cook at an early age. As a result, she loved to host friends and family to bountiful meals. She was primarily a homemaker, but worked for a few years at Dorothy May Dress Shop and as a secretary for Lowe’s Insurance. She was a long-time active member of Bethany Christian Church where she taught Sunday School for over 40 years, was a youth sponsor and a missionary agent for Jill Shaw, and taught Bible Study. Phyllis also taught at Rainbow Christian Camp ten years, served as a Brownie and Cub Scout Leader, and led a teenage girls’ Bible Study. As a result of her compassionate nature, unfailing faith and love for people of all ages, Phyllis has touched many lives through the years of her life.
One of the great delights of her life was when her family was gathered together, enjoying each other’s presence.
She is survived by her three children James “Jim” (Vicki) Harless, Laura Gloff, Kelly (Jim) Tumulty; nine grandchildren, Amber Harless, Brandon (Ashley) Harless, Amanda (Zach) McClain, Alycia (Emily) Gloff, Justin (Kati) Hobbs, Jordan (Morgan) Hobbs, Brittney Hobbs, Jaycee (Eric) Mey, Kaycee Tumulty; and nine great grandchildren.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Jack in 2022.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at 1 PM at Bethany Christian Church. Burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held at the church from 10 AM until the time of the service at 1 PM.
Memorial contributions may be given to Bethany Christian Church.
