Renate (Roitzsch) Hakenson, age 91, passed away on Oct. 26, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. She was born on May 9, 1932 in Berlin, Germany, daughter of the late William and Gertrude (Nemitz) Roitzsch. She moved to the United States in 1952. She worked as a custodian for many years at Yuba College in CA before she retired in the 1990’s. Renate is predeceased by her husband Charles V. Hakenson who passed away in 2015. She is also predeceased by her son Ronald “Rusty” Hakenson, her daughter Sharon Lea Sheehan and her sister Helga Burghardt. She is survived by her daughter Deborah LaValley and her husband John of West Springfield, her daughter in law Sue Hakenson of West Springfield, and her son in law John Sheehan of California; 6 grandchildren, John, Katie, Candice, Jayme, Meggen, and Kristen and 5 great grandchildren, Taylor, Christopher, Sage, Mackenzie and John. A visitation will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield St, Chicopee. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
