Anthony “Al” A. Matulaitis, 88, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2023 in the Life Care Center of Auburn.
Born in Worcester on April 22, 1935, he was the son of Anna (Petkus) and Anthony Matulaitis. He was educated in Worcester Schools, graduating from South High School in 1953. Al attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1957 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, and went on to complete his MBA. Al spent his career working as a metallurgist at local companies, including Norton Company and Worcester Wire.
Al married Helen Pappas on October 11, 1958, at Saint Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester, where he was a longtime member, enjoyed serving on the finance committee, remodeling of the cathedral, and assisting with the preparations for the biannual Greek Festival. Al was predeceased by his wife, Helen, on February 15, 2001.
Al is survived by his younger brother Joseph “Jay” of West Palm Beach, FL; two sons and one daughter: Michael and wife, Susan of Brewster, MA; Mark and wife, Patricia of Eastham, MA; and Anna-Maria and husband, Hector Cay of Worcester; five grandchildren, Christina (Dennis) Lally, Alexandra (Jan) Bialostok , Krystine (Matt) Fish, Andrew and Christopher Matulaitis and two great grandchildren Charlotte Lally and Mila Bialostok.
Dad loved all outdoor activities. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and gardener and would find any excuse to spend time outdoors. Dad started fishing with his father and would take trips to the Cape Cod canal in pursuit of striped bass. He would spend hours with his sons fishing for trout or saltwater game and spent as much time as possible on the water. Dad also enjoyed cruising with his daughter and family. Spending time with family was most important to dad and these memories will last forever.
Dad had a wide range of carpentry skills, building and finishing most of the family home on Wallingford Road. He was delighted that Anna-Maria and Krystine made their homes with their spouses on the property where he was raised. Dad had the ingenuity and skills to fix anything that needed repair and many times made it better than new. The love of the outdoors, home skills and his positive attitude are lessons he passed along to his sons and daughter. Dad will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 26th from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street.
