MOULTONBOROUGH --- We regretfully share the news that Barry Haight of Vernon, CT and Moultonborough, NH, passed away this past Wednesday, October 18, 2023.
Barry was born in Queens, NY, in 1946, to Joseph and Sylvia. He attended Francis Lewis High School before putting himself through college, studying biology at the State University of New York at Buffalo where he made lifelong friendships. He continued his education at SUNY Buffalo medical school, followed by an internship in Cincinnati, and then residency back in Buffalo where he focused on ophthalmology.
In 1975, after his medical education was complete, Barry joined an ophthalmology practice in Middletown, CT. One year later he opened his own practice in Vernon, CT. Barry served as the town eye doctor for 41 years until his retirement in 2017. He was passionate about providing good care to his patients, and he often remarked how much he loved his job.
Barry met the love of his life, Sharon, in 1965 when they were both undergrads at SUNY Buffalo. Excited to start their new lives together, the two were married on June 28th, 1969. Barry and Sharon always wanted a big family, and brought three children into the world. Jason arrived first in 1975, followed by Leslie in 1979, and finally Daniel in 1980. Barry worked tirelessly to make sure that his family had the very best upbringing and experiences, and he thoroughly enjoyed watching his children grow into adulthood (minus a few years here and there). Barry cherished his time with his family on vacations, teaching them to ski from a young age, frequent trips to Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire taking the family out on the boat, annual Aruba beach vacations, and even driving the whole group on the 10 hour 'Road to Hana' drive in Maui, which still to this day, none of the passengers have recovered from.
Barry grew up a New York Giants baseball fan. When he and his wife left New York and settled in CT, they made the right choice in adopting the Red Sox and Patriots as the family teams. A perfect weekend activity for Barry would be to listen to the Sox game on his headphones while going for a run, or walking around the property with Taffy, Abbie, or Willie, clearing out the woods or gardens. Never afraid to get his hands dirty, he often made it a family affair followed by a game of catch. Music was also a big part of Barry's life, and while he didn't play an instrument, he had a thorough record collection and was a huge folk and classic rock fan, influencing his kids with his great taste in music. His favorite road trip game was "Who's singing?" Barry always knew the answer.
Barry is survived by his wife Sharon, kids Jason (Demet), Leslie (Andy), and Daniel (Angel), grandkids Lilah, Kade, Ela, Niya, Asher and Vivian, sister Carol (Mark), nephew Jed, niece Eden (Doug), grandniece Grace, and sister-in-law Robin.
Donations in memory of Barry can be made to The Parkin's Foundation and would be greatly appreciated.
