Rita Lillian Horner, 104, of Whitman, passed away on October 13 at Saint Joseph’s Nursing Home after living a long-fulfilled life. Lillian was born in 1919 in Randoph, MA, and was preceded in death by her loving husband Daniel P. Horner.
Together they raised two beautiful children, Nancy and David. Lillian always strived to get ahead and worked at Handy Hanna in Whitman long before it was commonplace for woman to enter the work force and she was promptly promoted to supervisor.
In her down time, she served as Worthy Matron to the Eastern Star, gave support to the Rainbow Girls, was part of the 89ers, packed brown bag lunches and knit sweaters mittens and hats for new families in Whitman and made Teddy Bears for the fire department.
After she retired her and her husband traveled the world, spent time with friends and could always be counted on as the family babysitter. She was known for creativity knitting sweaters for the family, making quilts for everyone’s bed, and making beautiful wedding dresses for the girl’s weddings.
Her family was her prized possession, and she will be missed and remembered by everyone.
She leaves behind her daughter, Nancy (Horner) Dube, her son David Horner and his wife Shirley, Four grandchildren, Kathleen (Horner) Petrell and her husband Ray, Laurie (Studley) Murphy, Amy (Studley) Rita and her husband Dave, and David Horner and his wife Toni. She was blessed with nine great grandchildren, Megan Wright, Jarred Lowder, Chelsea Murphy, Kylie Marinez, Jake Topham, Nathan Horner, Zack Landreville, Molly Horner and Easton Horner. She was also the proud Nana of four great great grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend Lillian’s visiting hours on Friday October 20, from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, with a funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A burial will follow at Colebrook Cemetery, Whitman.
