Walter was born in Everett, MA on May 11, 1937, to Walter L. Stowell and Gertrude (Lanagan) (Stowell) Cray (dec).
He graduated from Malden High School. After high school he entered the Air Force and was trained and worked in weather/meteorology and was stationed in Korea and on Nantucket Island.
With his wife, Ginnie, he traveled to many European countries as well as all the Scandinavian countries including Iceland and Russia, South America, Greece and Greek Islands, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, and Azore Islands and most Caribbean Islands. Often, they travelled with their friends, Bernie and John Baronas, and brother-in-law, Bob Kelm, as well as occasionally with groups from St. William’s Church to Tewkesbury, England, Ireland, Wales, and Alaska.
After retiring from U.P.S. where he worked for 35 years, with their bicycles and dancing attire, they bought a trailer and travelled throughout the U.S., dancing, and biking along the way.
They enjoyed spending time at their “timeshare” at Madeira Beach, FL, and summer times at their place in Kennebunk, Maine.
They belonged to Walk’ N Mass (Volkssport, International) Walking Club and earned several badges and volunteered. Also “Rails-to-Trails” biking and cross-country skiing and ice skating brought them many hours of fun.
Ballroom dancing was their favorite pastime and sharing time with their ballroom dancing friends. They formerly belonged to NHBDA (New Hampshire Ballroom Dancing Assoc.)
Walter was active at the Tewksbury Senior Center and a former Adorer at the St. William’s Adoration Chapel.
Classes at LIRA (Learning in Retirement) at U. Mass-Lowell and their field trips with Jack and Kay Dunfey(dec) were always enjoyable.
