Jean A. (Mitchell) Brooks, 83, a long-time resident of East Bridgewater, MA,
passed away on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at the Atrium at Faxon Woods,
Quincy, MA under hospice care.
Born in Weymouth and raised in Rockland, she was the daughter of the late
Gerald W. Mitchell and Ruth E. (Delano) Mitchell. She was a graduate of Rockland
High School, class of 1959 and attended the College of Wooster in Ohio.
Jean and her husband John built a home and raised three children in East
Bridgewater. The Union Congregational Church in East Bridgewater became their
church home where they were active and supportive members throughout their
lives.
Growing up, Jean had a passion for music that lasted throughout adulthood. Early
on she studied and performed flute and piano. For a short time, she taught private
lessons in both instruments. Her greatest musical endeavor was having the
opportunity to become a minister of music in her church. Over many years she
served as the choir director, organist, and founder/director of the hand bell choir.
In addition to music, Jean also enjoyed reading, journaling, and gardening. For
several years she was a member of the East Bridgewater Garden Club.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, John E. Brooks, son Philip J.
Brooks and older sister Elizabeth A. Mitchell.
She is survived by her daughter Pamela J. Brooks of Quincy and son Peter G.
Brooks of West Yarmouth. She is further survived by her sister Ruth Ann (Mitchell)
Metcalf, brother-in-law Roger Metcalf, and sister-in-law Jane E. (Brooks) Bowles
and their respective families.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Sunday, October
15, 3:00 PM at the Union Congregational Church, 105 Pleasant Street, East
Bridgewater, MA. There will be a private burial at a later date.
Donations may be made in Jean's memory to the Union Congregational Church of
East Bridgewater.
