William Farrell, 92, husband of Margaret M. (Metcalf) Farrell, died September 29, 2023, on Hilton Head Island, SC. Born in Worcester, MA, he was the son of the late Neil H. And Margaret A. (Sweeney) Farrell, and brother of the late Cornelius J. Farrell.
Mr. Farrell was a graduate of St. Stephen’s Grammar and High Schools, class of 1949, and the Printing Department of Worcester Boys’ Trade High School. He worked 42 years in the printing industry at the Colonial Press, Clinton, MA, The Saratogian, Saratoga Springs, NY, and the Brockton (MA) Enterprise, retiring in 1993. Mr. Farrell was a member of the International Typographical Union / Communication Workers of America, inducted into the Worcester Chapter No. 165 in 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a former member of Grafton Hill American Legion 323, and a member of the Grafton Hillers’ Organization.
For many years Mr. Farrell authored a weekly country music column called “Up Country” in the Enterprise. William retired to Hilton Head Island to enjoy the beach, winters without snow and collecting paper ephemera.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters; Ms. Margaret Farrell of Columbus, OH, and Mrs. Marybeth Mehl of Whitman, MA; and two sons, Christopher and James Farrell, both of Rochester, MA; as well as three granddaughters.
His visitation will be held on Friday, October 13th from 9:00am until 11:00am in O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street.
