George Francis Monahan of Newton, passed away peacefully on October 3rd, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. George was born March 2, 1939 in Milwaukee, WI to the late John and Mary Monahan.
Raised in Roslindale, MA, George graduated from Brighton High School and East Coast Aero Technical School in Bedford, MA. He began his career with TWA, eventually becoming American Airlines Northeast Division maintenance and engineering tech crew chief-instructor. One of the greatest honors of his career was being asked to escort Pope John Paul ll on board the papal plane when he came for a visit to the United States. George was granted a private audience with the Pope while on board. He retired in 2015 after more than 50 years with TWA and American Airlines. Known for his passion for aviation and automobiles, there was nothing he couldn’t fix.
Loving husband to wife Clare Vaccaro Monahan of 53 years. Best dad to his children John Leitao-Monahan, Jennifer Monahan and Maria Monahan Khalifa. Papa to grandchildren Catherine, Victoria, Grayson and Wyatt. Survived by his brother James Monahan and his wife Ruth. Predecessed by his brothers Father Kieran (Edward) Monahan and William Monahan and his surviving wife Elizabeth.
A funeral Mass for George will be held in St. Joseph Church, Needham on Monday, October 9, at 11am. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery, Needham.
