Obituary

Edward W. O’Grady, age 76, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA. Ed was known as the patriarch of the O’Grady family as the oldest of 10 children born to Edward J. O’Grady and Kathleen (Lord) O’Grady in North Adams, MA. In 1964, he was drafted into the military. After two years of active duty in Vietnam, he chose to re-enlist for another two years and stayed in Vietnam. His rank was Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps at the time of his discharge in 1968. Shortly after returning home, Ed was introduced to the love of his life Deborah (Smith), whom he quickly married, and a few years later they started their family together. Ed was always a great protector of his family. The whole family enjoyed traveling together, they went on many cruises and quite a few trips to Las Vegas, to name a few. He was very active in the Cub Scouts, where he served as a scout leader and helped to build the most advanced Pinewood derby track of its time. Ed also coached basketball for his boys’ city team, called “No Fear”. He loved to golf, but he was best known in Western Massachusetts for his passion and talent for bowling. He acted as President in many bowling leagues for over 50 years and touched so many lives through the sport, making many cherished friends along the way. Bowling was another way Ed spent quality time with his family. He did all of this while carrying out a successful career as a chemist for Ashland for over 30 years with perfect attendance. Blessed with the gift of gab and a great sense of humor, Ed loved talking to and joking with people everywhere he went. He was always there with a joke and a smile, whether he was gambling at the Casino or out to his favorite restaurant. Ed was so proud of his family, and led by great example, teaching them to be kind, generous and treat everyone equally. Edward was predeceased by both of his parents, Edward and Kathleen (Lord) O’Grady, his cherished wife Deborah (Smith) O’Grady, two of his sons, Andrew and Christopher O’Grady and his brother James O’Grady. He is survived by his oldest son, Edward S. O’Grady and his life partner Melissa Losito of Feeding Hills, MA, his daughter Jennifer O’Grady of Chicopee, MA, his five grandchildren Caitlin, Tony, Sean, Andrew and Edward Jr., and his siblings, Kathleen (O’Grady) and Butch Wilson, Geri Jopson, Mollie O’Grady, Marguerite Haluch, Vickie Popkowski, Timothy and Elaine O’Grady, John “Jack” O’Grady and his wife Laurie and Joseph O’Grady, as well as his many nieces, nephews and friends.
