On January 6, 1934, Eugene Joseph Tanner graced this world with his presence. On September 22nd, surrounded by the embrace of his beloved family, he peacefully departed this life at the age of 89.
Gene leaves behind a legacy of love and family. He is survived by his cherished older brother, Charles Tanner, and his four adoring children: Karen Geiger (Alan), Denise Forbes (Trevor), Glenn Tanner (Dominica), and Kevin Tanner (Stacy). Gene was also blessed with 13 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren, a testament to the profound impact he had on generations.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Eleanor, with whom he shared 65 beautiful years of marriage, and his son, Eugene Tanner, Jr. (Maryann).
Gene's journey through life was marked by dedication and hard work. He devoted 30 years of his life to the Brooklyn Union Gas Company, earning the respect of colleagues and friends. But his story doesn't end there; Gene's entrepreneurial spirit led him to run his own little hotdog stand on Flushing Ave at one point in his life, where he found joy in serving up delicious hotdogs to the community.
Born and raised in the heart of Brooklyn, Gene remained a steadfast New Yorker for most of his life before embarking on new adventures. He later called Long Island, New York, and Pennsylvania home, but it was in Massachusetts, with his daughter Denise and her husband Trevor in Great Barrington, where he resided after the loss of his beloved Eleanor.
Gene's love knew no bounds. He was not only a loving husband but also a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. In the leisurely years of retirement, Gene and Eleanor explored the world together, their travels taking them to far-flung destinations such as England, South Africa, and the glitz of Las Vegas. They reveled in the joy of family cruises, creating lasting memories with their loved ones.
Gene's heart was as big as his love for dogs, especially his faithful St. Bernard, Brandy. He had a passion for sports, finding excitement in bowling, handball, and his unwavering support for the Giants and the Yankees. His enthusiasm for football and baseball was infectious, and he shared countless memorable moments with fellow fans.
In Eugene Joseph Tanner, we remember a man of integrity, a family man whose love and laughter enriched the lives of all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but forever cherished in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear Gene. Your legacy lives on in the love you shared, the memories you created, and the hearts you touched.
