George A. Fopiano, 80, of Hanover, formerly of Abington passed away Thursday September 21, 2023. He was the beloved son to the late Arthur and Alice (Beary) Fopiano.
George was a graduate of Abington High School, Class of 1961. He went on to attend Burdett College for business and received his associates degree. For many years George worked on finance at General Electric Finance Corporation and Prime Computer, and later went on to work for McSherry Reality as a realtor. At age 79 and until his passing George worked as a part time baker at the Norwell Stop & Shop. George served in the Marine Reserve from 1964-1970.
George was very involved in his community; he was the Bookkeeper/Treasurer for the Hanover and Braintree-Weymouth ELKs, Rockland Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of the American Legion Post 149 in Hanover and Rockland Eagles.
George was a phenomenal athlete and had a true passion for sports. In George’s late forties he joined the Randolph Oilers semi-pro football team. He continued his love for football by becoming an assistant coach for both the Hingham and Abington high school football teams. He enjoyed attending football games with his family and friends.
His devotion for athletics inspired George at the age of 70 to go back to school and receive an associate degree in Physical Fitness Training at Quincy College. After graduating George worked at the Quincy and Hanover YMCA. George also had an extensive weightroom in his home called “Fopiano Fitness.”
George is survived by his three children, Michael and his wife Stephanie of AZ, Nicole Kelly of Halifax, and Carin Faghan of Hanover. His siblings Edward and his wife Joyce Fopiano of Middleboro, and Mary Reitan of Oregon. George was the loving grandfather to Kayla Beaucage, Alex Fopiano, Lexi Kelly, Christopher Fopiano, and Jake Faghan. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Tori, Ashton, and Maeve, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours Wednesday September 27 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. A procession will begin at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, on Thursday morning September 28 at 8:00 AM and proceed to St. Mary’s Church, Hanover for a Funeral Mass to be held at 9:00 AM. A burial will follow in Hanover Center Cemetery.
