CHICOPEE – Omer H. Dumais, 93, of the Willimansett section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, September 20, 2023. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born at home in Chicopee on April 5, 1930, a beloved son of the late Joseph and Rosealma (Provost) Dumais. He was raised in Chicopee, graduated from Chicopee High School and was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a longtime crane operator for the Bennett Wrecking Company and Springfield Steel Erectors and a member of the Steel Workers Union Local 98. Omer was a skilled carpenter, plumber and an all around do-it-yourselfer which included building the family home and barns on the farm. He was involved in scouting for many years, serving as a leader and scout master for the Explorers Troop 404 and the Boy Scouts Troop 424, as well as the 4-H Outdoor Adventurers. During his retirement, he spent many hours hiking with his grandkids on Mount Tom, attending Red Sox games and camping at the Cape with his sons and grandchildren. Throughout his life, he cared for a variety of animals and creatures great and small including Simba, Sheba, Betty and Wilma, and Dandy. Active in his Catholic faith, he was a communicant of the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and currently was a communicant of Saint Anne Church, both in Chicopee. Above all, Omer loved spending time with his beloved family and his many dear friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and soul mate of 67 years, Jeanne M. (Lafleur) Dumais. He leaves his six loving children, Omer H. Dumais, Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Hudson, FL, David A. Dumais and his wife, Elaine, Dennis H. Dumais and Linda J. Dumais, all of Chicopee, and Cindy J. Dumais-Holubowich and her husband, Mark Holubowich, and Joseph A. Dumais and his wife, Karen, all of Granby; his 11 cherished grandchildren, Denise, Daniel, Micky, Donald, Kelly, Tony, Dylan, Jessica, Carly, Taylor and Brandie; his seven cherished great-grandchildren, Peyton, Hadleigh, Walker, McKenzie, Owen, Hannah and Hailey; his brother-in-law, Harvey Lafleur of Chicopee; and his many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his two brothers, Eugene Dumais and Raymond Dumais; his two sisters, Edna Weston and her husband, Bob, and Theresa Bockhaus and her husband, Arthur; his three brothers-in-law, Paul Lafleur and his wife, Alice, Russell Lafleur and his wife, Doris, and Roger A. Lafleur, Sr. and his wife, Jeanne; and his sister-in-law, Margie Lafleur. His family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 12:30 p.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. There are no visiting hours. His funeral arrangements are entrusted to the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Because of Omer’s limitless love of children and his selfless generosity, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, Springfield Unit, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
