Stephen J. Alphas, MD, 96, of Weston passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, September 19th, 2023. He was the beloved husband to his wife of 66 years, Alexandra (Condakes) Alphas; devoted father to John S. Alphas (Sharon), the late Kathryn A. Richlen (Craig), Susan A. Bruning (Kevin), and Peter S. Alphas (Rory); and cherished grandfather to his twelve grandchildren: Sophie, Tess, Stephen, and Stella Alphas; Alexandra Richlen Dillaway (Nelson) and Stephen Richlen; Stephen and Peter Bruning; Stephen, Donald, Alexia, and Susan Alphas.
Born in Medford, MA to the late John and Katherine (Pantazelos) Alphas, Dr. Alphas grew up in the South End, and was a diligent student at the Boston Latin School. At the age of 18, he then served in the U.S. Army in Germany during WWII, where he witnessed firsthand the critical need for quality medical care.
Following the war, he went on to pursue a lifelong career dedicated to the care and service of others. After graduating from Boston University School of Medicine (BUMC), Dr. Alphas ran a thriving private practice. Beloved for his remarkable kindness and compassion, Dr. Alphas became known for his dedication to his patients, often visiting them at home or in the hospital, even long after the era of physician house calls. His medical and humanitarian impact extended well beyond the walls of his practice, as Dr. Alphas later took on the position Medical Director at Raytheon Company, where he built in-house medical practices at company locations across the U.S. and all over the world. His work gave thousands of employees access to quality medical care on a global scale. His love for helping others through medicine led him to participate in many New England medical associations. He served as President of the BUMC Alumni and remained active with the Boston University Alumni throughout his life.
Dr. Alphas was rooted in his love and deep commitment to his family. He led by example as a man of faith, and as a longtime member of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston, MA. As an avid golfer, skier, and outdoor sports enthusiast, he was also a longtime member of Woodland Golf Club, and his happiest times were spent playing golf with his family and friends, as well as his fellow members of the New England Seniors group. Dr. Alphas will be missed by all who knew and loved him, and his legacy lives on.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, September 23rd at 11:00 am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA. Visiting hours are Friday, September 22nd, 4:00–7:00 pm at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington Street, Wellesley, MA. Interment in Linwood Cemetery, Weston, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 57 Brown Street, Weston, MA.
