Obituary

Lorraine Lois (Crook) "Cookie" Hodgins, 90, of New Bedford died September 19, 2023 after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late George Edward "Buzz" Hodgins.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of Richard and Bertha (Harrison) Crook. She lived in New Bedford all of her life.

Mrs. Hodgins was a graduate of New Bedford High School and the St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing.

She had a distinguished career in nursing at St. Luke's Hospital, in the private practice of William Downey M.D. and retired as Director of Nursing with Pediatric Associates of New Bedford. She considered her greatest professional accomplishment to be working tirelessly during the polio epidemic at Charles Chapin Hospital in Providence during her training.

She was actively involved as a volunteer and member of the Women's Auxiliary of the South End Youth Athletic Association and enjoyed swimming at her beloved South End beaches. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Beth L. Sylvia of New Bedford and son, Peter M. Hodgins and wife Donna of South Dartmouth. She was the loving grandmother of Timothy Sylvia, Rachael Hodgins and her husband Alden Johnson and Zachery Hodgins and his fiancé Madison Reis and great-grandmother of Brooks, Walker and Ava.

She was the mother-in-law of the late Michael J. Sylvia.

Her visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 24th from 5-7 PM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Her Funeral Service will be held on Monday, September 25th at 9 AM at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery.
