Obituary



Mary F. (Papineau) Cormier, age 65, of Brockton, died peacefully at home on September 18, 2023. She was the devoted wife of the late William D. Cormier, Sr. Born and raised in Brockton, she was the daughter of the late Marshall and Christine (Crowley) Papineau and remained a lifelong resident of the city.

Growing up, Mary enjoyed spending time with her parents, siblings, and friends, often partaking in neighborhood kickball games and backyard basketball. In her youth, Mary was a Girl Scout, and was an accomplished sewist as a teen. Mary was a 1975 graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School, where she participated in yearly musicals, the photography club, and was a member of the yearbook staff. Mary attended Northeastern University where she studied nursing. She was a dedicated employee of the Brockton School Department where she was a paraprofessional at the Ashfield School. She retired in 2021 as an administrative assistant at Brockton High School.

Mary was a kind, gentle and compassionate spirit who had a deep love of her family, animals and football. She was crafty and creative, enjoying quilting and crocheting and shared these passions with her kids. Mary met her late husband William (Bill) in elementary school. She and Bill worked alongside each other at Woolworth's when they began dating. Having resided in Dennis during the early years of her marriage, she was a lifelong lover of Cape Cod and its beaches, and was fond of summer trips to Chatham with family. As a devoted mother and grandmother, Mary made her family feel endlessly loved and was ever filled with pride.

Mary was the loving mother of William Cormier, Jr. of Brockton, Heather Rios and her husband Carlos Rios, Jr. of Brockton and Moira Cormier and her husband William Ashworth of Weymouth. She was also the cherished grandmother of Carter and Nora Rios and beloved sister of Susan Schaeffer of NC, Mark Papineau of PA, Ellen McCabe and her husband Michael, Sr. of Brockton, and Stephen Papineau and his wife Josephine of Brockton. She also leaves many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont St. (rte. 123) Brockton on Friday, September 22, 2023 from 4-7 pm followed by a service in the funeral home at 7pm.
