Donald Merrill Gwinnup

Donald Merrill Gwinnup, 96, of Anderson, passed away peacefully at the house of his son Don and Jody, in the presence of his family, September 17, 2023.
He was born in Anderson, Indiana April 30, 1927, the only child of Howard Gwinnup and Helen (Sample) Noel. As a youth he delivered the Anderson newspaper and worked at Gwinn’s Drug Store. After graduating from high school Don served in the U.S Army and was stationed in Austria post World War Two.
Don graduated with a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Purdue University. While at Purdue, he met his wife, Barbara, who also attended Purdue. He was active in the Student Union and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. As an engineer, he served in Anderson as City Engineer. He also served on the Anderson Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Sewer District. In private practice, Don formed Gwinnup Engineering, a site civil engineering and land surveying company.
Don and Barbara enjoyed many years at Anderson Country Club. Upon retirement Don and Barbara resided in Florida and South Carolina before returning to Anderson in 2018.
Don is survived by five children, Donald (Jody) Gwinnup, Jr., Bruce Gwinnup, Stephen (Sheri) Gwinnup, Laura (John) Collier, Julie (John) Derucki; 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara, parents, step-brother, James Gwinnup, and grandson Liam Gwinnup.
A private family service will be held.
