SPRINGFIELD – Janet R. (Strawlovitz) Hurley, 88, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Tuesday, September 12, 2023. She passed into Eternal Life at the Jewish Nursing Home in Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on May 9, 1935, a beloved daughter of the late Rudolph and Alvine J. (Young) Strawlovitz. She was raised and educated in the East Forest Park section of Springfield and had moved to Hungry Hill in 1961. She furthered her education and graduated in 1956 from the former Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield. She was employed as a Registered Nurse at the former Wesson Memorial Hospital in Springfield and later worked with the Springfield Public Schools. She was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church and currently was a communicant of Mary, Mother of Hope Church, both in Springfield. She was a member of the Hungry Hill Senior Center, the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. During her leisure time, she enjoyed reading, antiquing, puzzles and traveling. She also enjoyed spending time at Cape Cod with her late husband and family in Dennisport. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, John F. “Jack” “Red” Hurley, Jr. who was Called Home on October 20, 2015. They were married on September 23, 1961 at Holy Cross Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. She leaves her loving son and daughter in law, Timothy J. Hurley and his wife, Gail, of Longmeadow; her daughter in law, Ann Hurley of Springfield; her four cherished grandchildren, Sean, Kathleen, Jake and Josh Hurley; her dear sister, Marie Zeppa of Springfield; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her loving son, John F. “Jacky” Hurley III who was Called Home on January 29, 2001; her dear brother in law, Leo Zeppa; and her two dear sisters in law, Margaret Gloster and Catherine “Tootsie” Aberdale. Her Funeral will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (the funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. prior to her Mass.
