Paul A. Smiegal, age 89, of Brockton, died peacefully on September 8th after a long illness. He was born January 4, 1934 in Hyde Park, MA to Anthony and Margaret ( McCarthy) Smiegal. Paul was a “double eagle” proudly graduating from Boston College High and Boston College. During the Korean War, Paul served as a Private First Class. After the war, he met the love of his life Phyllis Oliver at the Brockton Fair. They were married for 49 years before her passing in 2010.
Paul touched many lives during his career as a beloved elementary math teacher and principal in the Avon and Brockton school systems. He had a great laugh that made everyone happy to be around him. Paul was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. He loved following sports of any kind and was a diehard Red Sox fan. He enjoyed summer vacations at Old Orchard Beach, traveling with his wife, a good game of Uno with his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed time spent golfing and bowling.
Paul is survived by his only son Paul (Cynthia) of Clinton, NY and grandchildren Will (Boston, MA), Caroline (New York, NY) and Julia (Durham, NC). He leaves behind his cherished sister Joan Cardoza, her son George (Sylvia) and sister in law Kathy Oliver. Paul had a special bond with Phyllis’s cousin Mike Moran, Mike’s former wife Susan Moran and their children Jack and Brian Moran. He was predeceased by brothers in law George Cardoza and Don Oliver.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff of Lifecare West Bridgewater for their exceptional care of Paul and a profound gratitude to longtime neighbor and friend Marilyn Marrese for her daily visits and great care.
Visitation will be held in the Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street (Rte 123) Brockton on Friday, September 15 from 10-11am, followed by a funeral service at 11am. For those wishing to honor Paul’s life, please consider a donation to a children’s charity of your choice in lieu of flowers.
