Richard ‘Rick’ W. Cashell, Jr., of Westwood, MA, and Charleston, SC, passed away unexpectedly on September 8, 2023, at Beth Israel Hospital, with his daughter, Caryn Bosworth-Cashell, and her husband, William ‘Bill’ Driscoll, at his side.
Born and raised in Dorchester, MA, Rick was the son of Richard W. Cashell and Gertrude ‘Trudi’ (Riley) Cashell. He attended St. Gregory Catholic School, graduated from Don Bosco High School, and then Northeastern University with a BS in Electrical Engineering. Rick took an early interest in computer programming while at Northeastern, literally moving 1s and 0s around in the back of a mainframe computer to get results in his first job.
He worked for a variety of corporations over the years, including a stint writing software for tracking missiles at a classified site in the south pacific.
Rick’s real passions were bowling and the Red Sox. His grandfather, John Cashell, introduced him to bowling when he was 7 years old at Boston Bowl – and he never looked back. After retiring from business, he became a participant in the Senior Circuit of the Professional Bowlers Association (PBA) and past president, former champion, and an active member of the New England Bowlers Association (NEBA).
Rick is survived by his daughter, Caryn Bosworth-Cashell, and her husband, Bill Driscoll, of Dedham, MA; his long-time girlfriend, Kathryn MacGillivray of Charleston, SC.
Visiting hours will be held at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 4-7pm. A funeral procession will form at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 15 at 12pm and proceed to Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree for a graveside service. Relatives and friends kindly invited.
