Richard M. “Dick” Hines, age 97, of Medford, formerly of Winchester, passed away at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington on September 7, 2023. He was the beloved husband for 70 years of the late Catherine M. “Cay” (Foley) Hines, until her death in June.
Born in Waltham, MA, Dick was the son of the late Francis R. and Jeanette (Buckley) Hines.
Dick was raised in Waltham and graduated from Boston College High School in 1944. Immediately after graduation, with World War II raging, Dick enlisted in the United States Army serving in the 41st Infantry Division in the Philippines Campaign. After Japan’s surrender, Dick served in the occupation forces in that country.
Upon his discharge from Army with the rank of Sergeant, Dick returned to Massachusetts and enrolled in Boston College. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Dick began a long career as an insurance underwriter.
Dick was a very active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Winchester. He taught religious education, was a long-time lector and served as the president of the parish council.
Dick is lovingly survived by his children: Mary Jo Clark (Brian) of Georgetown, SC, Richard G. Hines of Prairie Village, KS, Cathleen A. McInerney (Bob) of Reading and Daniel F. Hines (Esther) of Bedford, MA. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Dick was predeceased by his brothers David Hines, Francis Hines, and John Hines. He is survived by his sisters Mary Hodgdon and Jeanette Cloherty.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, September 15 @ 10AM in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Maristhill Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, 66 Newton St., Waltham, MA 02453, where Dick resided for nearly nine years prior to his death. https://www.maristhill.org.
