Helen Louise (Rowley) Murphy, formerly of Wellesley, died on September 6 at the age of 93. Of robust health until recently, Helen’s active life included family, friends and travel with her late husband Joseph L. Murphy. They enjoyed skiing on the great mountains of the world, taking brisk walks around town and spending time on Cape Cod.
Born on October 31, 1929 to Sarah and Francis Rowley, Helen was the oldest of four including her beloved and ever-near sister Mary Rowley formerly of West Roxbury and Falmouth, and two brothers who preceded her in death, Frank Rowley of West Roxbury and David Rowley (Geraldine) of Canton. Just a teenager when their father suddenly passed, Helen assumed the role of secondary parent to her siblings, overseeing their education and stepping in, ever quietly, to provide a steer and support. She carried this responsibility with trademark fortitude and an unbending exactness that defined her life and her career at the New England Telephone Company.
A “foodie” ahead of her time, Helen savored a delicious meal and finding new offerings at her local health food store or fish market. She loved dogs, especially her two Westies. But even more did she love hearing about, talking and being with her many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. From bocce to a game of pickup basketball, she was always up for a challenge, a chat and a word of advice.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to visiting hours on Saturday, September 9 from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington St., (Rt.16) Wellesley followed by a funeral Mass in St. John the Evangelist Church, Wellesley Hills at 11:00 a.m. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham.
