William Henry McGrath, 79, of Hudson, NH, passed away Saturday, August 26, 2023 surrounded by his loving family in Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH. He was born on June 17, 1944 in Manchester, NH, a son of the late William and Eleanor (Douglas) McGrath. William was raised in Derry and had been a long-time Derry resident. He worked for the Derry Fire Department from 1965 - 1982, retiring as Fire Commissioner. Following his retirement, he and his beloved wife Margie moved to Port Orange, FL where they lived for over 30 years. More recently Bill returned to NH, settling in Hudson for the last several years. He enjoyed tinkering on things and puttering around his home. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, and will be sadly missed by all those who knew him.
He is survived by two sons, David McGrath of Manchester and Stephen McGrath and wife Jennifer of Raymond, NH; two grandchildren, Nathan and Jillian McGrath; a sister-in-law, Shirley Surgent and husband Lou; as well as extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret (Colligan) McGrath in 2018.
Per Bill’s wishes, following cremation there will be no calling hours or funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Hospital, or the Alzheimer's Foundation. The Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry is assisting the family with arrangements.
