GILFORD --- Melvin “Mel” Joseph Elie, 79, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 at home in Gilford, NH surrounded by those who loved and cherished him.
Mel was born on January 3, 1944, in Norwich, Connecticut, the son of the late Leonce Charles Elie and Frances Terease (Motyleurig) Elie.
Mel proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam War. Carrying his passion of cooking for his fellow service members, he returned home and enjoyed grilling for his family on a regular basis. Mel spent many years driving tractor trailers across the United States and working in mills before retiring in New Hampshire.
When not spending time out on Lake Winnipesauke on his fishing boat relaxing and not catching as many fish as he would like, Mel was always looking for the next joke to play on his friends and family.
If you knew Mel, you learned to check your birthday cake first before eating it.
Before the Parkinson’s started to take ahold of his life, you could find him on a golf course, playing cribbage, or enjoying a beautiful motorcycle ride to Squam Lake where he would find peace in fishing.
Mel is survived by his “Babe,” Faith Bond, and their rekindled lifetime of memories. Mel also leaves behind 1 sister; 1 son; 1 daughter; 4 son-in-law’s; 1 daughter-in-law; 3 step daughters; also left with fond memories of their Papi are 21 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Mel was predeceased by his twin brother; 2 sisters; a second brother; 1 stepdaughter and 1 stepson.
When the sun shines and moonlight peaks thru the clouds no matter where you are or who you’re with, may it always be known that Mel will forever watch over you while his beautiful soul rests in peace until we meet again!
Per Mel’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services.
