It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bernard G. "Bernie" Silva, 89, of New Bedford on August 21, 2023 at his son's home in Florida surrounded by his family.
He was the husband of the late Therese Y. (Alves) Silva, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Manuel G. and Janet M. (Machado) Silva, he lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Silva was an active communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was an active member of St. Vincent dePaul Society. He was awarded the Marian Medal from the Dioceses of Fall River for his many years of service to his parish.
He was formerly employed by Cameo Curtains, Mars Bargain Land, Atlantic Thrift and East Falmouth Auto Supply until his retirement.
Mr. Silva enjoyed volunteering at the soup kitchen in downtown New Bedford. He was an avid sports fan.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Survivors include his daughter, Marie T. Guy and her husband Michael of Port Charlotte, FL; 3 sons, Robert B. Silva of Port Charlotte, FL, James B. Silva and Paul B. Silva, both of New Bedford; a brother, Raymond Silva of New Bedford; a sister, Jacqueline Furtado of Dartmouth; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late David B. Silva and the brother of the late Dennis Silva.
His Funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 29th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church at 10 AM. Burial with follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, August 28th from 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish 121 Mt. Pleasant St. New Bedford, MA 02740
