Vera Mae Rowell Smith, 84, of Alma, Georgia, died Sunday, August 20, 2023, at Coffee Regional Medical Center in Douglas, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held 10 AM, Wednesday, August 23, 2023, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, Georgia, with the Rev. Jeremy Cox officiating. Bobby Murray will give the eulogy. Interment will follow in New Hope Cemetery in Coffee County, Georgia. The family will receive friends from 6-8 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Smith was born October 29, 1938, in Ocilla, Georgia, to the late Waldo & Jessie Mae Goff Rowell. She was a homemaker and loved to color and read. She also enjoyed watching Brenda Gantt’s cooking show.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Herman Smith of Alma; her daughter, Beverley Murray of McRae; two grandsons: Bobby & Brandy Murray of Fitzgerald and Chris & Amber Murray of Statesboro; a great-grandson, Bryler Murray; and three sisters and their spouses: Lene Rowell of Douglas, Lizzy & Carroll Young of Wray, and Jessie Lee & Hershell Jones of Douglas. A host of nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, John E. Murray and four sisters: Melba Grace Rowell, Peggy Bess, Deborah Conner, and Mattie Rowell Young.
