Of Needham, formerly of Milton. After a full and long life, Edward Morgan Mahoney, M.D. passed away surrounded by his loving wife Gertrude and children on August 17, 2023.
Son of the late Edward Aloysius Mahoney and Mildred (Collins) Mahoney. Brother of Morgan Mahoney M.D. and wife Emilie (Bell) of Needham, and Madelyn (Mahoney) Bilodeau and husband Gerald Bilodeau of Newton.
Beloved husband of Gertrude A. Mahoney (Costello). Loving father of Edward Mahoney Jr. of Needham, Nancy O’Leary and her husband John of Needham, John Mahoney & his wife Kelly (Fitzgerald) of Norfolk, Greg Mahoney and his wife Sharon (Kelly) of Walpole.
Devoted and loving grandfather of Ward, Charlie, Emily, Lisa, Austin, Olivia, Shannon, Jack, Maggie, Molly and Nicole.
Edward attended Harvard University and graduated Harvard Medical School in 1950, and served in both the Navy and Army overseas. He was the chief of Urology at the Carney Hospital, President of the New England American Urological Association in the 1990s and long time surgeon at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
As a doctor, he was passionate about his patients and dedicated to his medical calling. During the blizzard of 1978, when no cars could navigate the roads, he saddled up his horse, Big Red, and rode into Boston from his home in Milton, stabling his horse in the hospital parking garage. This hardy New Englander and dedicated doctor wasn’t about to let a little snow keep him from his patients.
A true believer in education, Edward served on the board of The Dexter-Southfield School for 35 years, proud of three sons and two grandsons who attended.
Edward loved life, and some of his deepest loves included: his family, being a doctor, horses, bow ties, the cottage on Scraggy Neck, ice cream, optimism, swimming, sailing, skiing, tailgating at the Harvard-Yale game, his siblings, his children, his grandchildren, and his Gert. He was a force of nature who loved fiercely and was beloved by family, friends and patients.
