CHICOPEE - Charles D. Malone, 81, a longtime resident of the Fairview section of Chicopee, passed away quietly at home with his family by his side on Tuesday, August 15, 2023. The beloved son of the late Dorothy (Dudley) and John P. Malone, Sr., he was born in Holyoke on June 24, 1942 and raised in Granby. Chuck leaves his devoted and loving wife of 59 years, Terry (Quintal), and their two children, his son, Shawn Malone, Captain, US Navy (Retired) and wife Heather of Vestal, New York; his daughter, Carrie Malone Rivera and husband Chris of Raleigh, North Carolina; and his four grandchildren, Samantha Malone of New York and Madison Malone of Nagasaki, Japan and Olivia Rivera and Xavier Rivera of North Carolina. He also leaves his two brothers, Tom Malone and his spouse Jane of Vernon, Connecticut and Jim Malone of West Springfield; and his sisters in law, Darcia (Jones) Malone of Somers, Connecticut, Jacky Quintal of Milan, New Hampshire and Irene (Quintal) Grötchen and husband Gunther of Stein am Rhein, Switzerland, as well as his much-loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John P. “Jack” Malone, Jr. He graduated in 1960 from South Hadley High School where he was co-captain of the 1959 varsity football team. A hardworking, skilled heavy equipment operator, he spent his lifetime working as a proud member of Local 98 where he was also the president of the retirees club. He served our country as a Specialist in the Army National Guard and Army Reserves. He loved sports, games and playing cards, especially Trivial Pursuit and Chicopee Pitch and Hearts, and he was a player and manager for Granby Café and Kelly’s Grove men’s softball teams in the 1960s and 1970s. He was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Chicopee where he was an usher and a girl’s youth league basketball coach for the parish as well. In retirement, he drove buses for Mount Holyoke College and served his community as a Chicopee Schools crossing guard and a longtime Ward 9 Precinct B polling warden. His Funeral will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Rose Cemetery, 226 Granby Road, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, August 23, 2023 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. The funeral home parking lot is located in the rear. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
