Angelo “Sonny” DeVito, of Danvers, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 10th, after a recent decline in health. Angelo was born in Medford, MA, on January 5th, 1929 to his parents Joseph and Elizabeth Genzale. Angelo’s father was born in Ariano di Puglia, Avellino, Campania, Italy and came to Boston when he was a teenager where he became a barber. Angelo followed in his father’s footsteps and became a barber as well.
Angelo enlisted in the United States Army at the end of World War II, at the age of 16. He served for a year and a half before being honorably discharged. Upon returning home to Medford, Angelo made plans to marry his childhood sweetheart Delores Petrillo, and they married in 1949.
Angelo acquired his Masters Barber license and opened his own barbershop called “Sonny’s Barbershop” on Main St., in Medford where he worked for several decades. Angelo retired shortly after the death of his wife Delores in 2006.
Angelo enjoyed watching football and playing poker but his favorite activity was spending time with his family, especially his great-grandson D.J. They spent nearly every day together and were the best of friends despite 80 years apart in age.
Angelo is predeceased by his beloved wife Delores (Petrillo) DeVito, his loving son Robert DeVito and his devoted daughter Delores (DeVito) Gallant. Angelo is survived by his treasured granddaughter Nicole Gallant Nunes, her husband Derek Nunes and by his cherished great-grandson D.J. Nunes.
On behalf of Angelo’s wishes all services will be private.
