Patricia Ruth Cooke
Patricia (Pat) Ruth (Allen) Cooke Nangle of Beaufort SC via Quincy and Cohasset MA, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 9, 2023 at age 77. Born May 4, 1946, she was eldest of the three children of Richard and Josephine (Tomaszewski) Allen, who had met while he was on leave in Edmonton, Alberta with the US Army during World War II.
Raised in Massachusetts, Pat took great pride and joy in always maintaining the family connections with both her father’s Allen / Bascom / Brock family tree and her mother’s Canadian roots, frequently visiting and remaining in constant contact with her mother’s 11 Tomaszewski brothers and sisters and their (very) extended line of her cousins, and second cousins, and third (and fourth...) cousins.
Her creativity and variety of interests led her down many paths in her life, professionally, personally, and charitably. She owned and operated a gift and ceramics shop in Weymouth Landing during the 1970’s, was a sought after florist for most of the 1980’s, and operated the Wedges and Slices snack bar at the Braintree Golf Course into the 1990’s, an experience she brought to the Wild Dunes Golf Resort after relocating to South Carolina during the winter of 1994 because, according to her, “I’ve officially experienced the last time I ever want to deal with snow.”
She leaves behind the love of her life, Jim Nangle of Beaufort, SC via Danvers, MA. While it took a while for them to find each other they shared a life for over 40 years, the last 28 relocated from their home state of Massachusetts to South Carolina, which they fell in love with on their honeymoon in 1984. They golfed, fished, and gardened together when they weren’t extensively traveling wherever on the globe they wanted to see, or whatever destination Pat could find one of her legendary great deals for.
Most recently she had devoted a small part of her time proving she could grow the best luffa in the greater Beaufort area, and dedicating large part of her time to several organizations she held very dear to her heart, including fostering for both Southeast Corgi Rescue and Animal Lovers of Edisto and volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Beaufort SC.
She is survived by her 3 children: Catharine Cooke-Chiruna, widow of Richard Chiruna, of Lakeville, MA, Peter Allen Cooke of Las Vegas, NV, and James and Eileen Cooke of Mansfield MA and her 4 stepdaughters; Christine and Jim Houser of Adams Run SC, Rosemary Nangle Seyfried of Salem MA, Sharon and Joe Conley of Salem MA, and Vanessa L’Abbe of Danvers.
She will also be missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren Michael and Antonia Davidson with Maddalena Josephine of Haverhill MA, Ashley Cooke of Middleboro MA, Peter Cooke Jr of Las Vegas NV, Alissa and Ethan Cooke of Mansfield MA, Richard and Lani Chiruna with James of Whitman MA, Steve and Tina Chiruna with Chloe and Steven of Plymouth, MA, Chris and Tracy Chiruna with Morgan of Lakeville MA, Carolyn Chiruna with Abby and Caroline Bosader of Lakeville MA, Morgan and John Viars with Anthony Carambia of SC, Jimmy and Courtany Houser with Franklin of Adams Run SC, Madeleine and Paul Alex Hinson with Brielle and Knox, Margaret and James Smith, Eleanor Seyfried, and Isobel Seyfried , and Joshua and Megan L’Abbe from Danvers.
Her brothers and their families, David and Marsha Allen of Yemassee SC and Richard and Julie Allen of Northport FL will miss their older sister and aunt.
Visitation hours will be held from 3:00-5:00 PM on Friday, August 18 at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home located at 55 North Main Street in Mansfield MA, followed by a celebration of Pat’s life at the house of Jim and Eileen, also in Mansfield. Please feel free to reach out to Jim at (508) 243-2301 or [email protected] with any questions, thoughts, or great memories you may have.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers or cards a donation is made in Pat’s memory to the Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 2747, Bluffton SC 29910 or online at HabitatHHI.charityproud.org.
