Obituary

John Joseph Mackin, 60, lifelong resident of Brockton, made his peaceful transition to eternal life on August 5, 2023. He was born March 28, 1963 to Alfred J. and Beverly E. (Loud) Mackin.

Growing up in the City of Champions, John was heavily involved in sports from his youth. He played football and little league baseball and was a member of the baseball team at Brockton High School. John channeled his passion for sports by helping his daughter Nicole, his nephews and his grandchildren to grow their knowledge and skills at every opportunity. He loved taking an active role by helping them to learn, love and improve their games. You could always find John on the sidelines. From t-ball games to playoff Bruins games, he enjoyed every minute of every game.

After graduating from Brockton High School in 1981, John completed his formal education in 1985 with a degree in science from the New England Institute of Technology, but he had a lifelong passion for learning, reading and researching topics that ranged far and wide. Whether it was a book from the 1800s or a new documentary online, he took it all in.

John loved his career as a real estate professional. His “real estate IQ” was unmatched. Patiently and methodically, he discovered every detail of every property.

He made it a priority to nurture his relationships with his friends, many of whom he has known since he was a child. He loved spending time on the water and could often be found relaxing at the beach. He loved to travel and shared his adventures with so many. John was big-hearted, always there to lend a hand, a kind word and love. His kindness, humor, keen story-telling ability and graciousness will be dearly missed by all, including his very wide circle of friends.

John was also enthusiastic about fundraising for many causes. You could often find him on a golf course with a group and was known to stop in to any auction that would bring charity to those less fortunate.

John was the beloved father of Nicole Houghton and husband Neal of Raynham and devoted grandfather to Molly, Will and Emma Houghton. He was the cherished brother of Diane Miller and her husband Michael of Raynham and uncle to their children Marc, Kelly, Matthew and Thomas. He was the loving companion to Jenna Verrochi of Hull. He also leaves behind his brothers Donald and Daniel Mackin.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, August 13 from 2-6pm at Conley Funeral Home, 138 Belmont Street, Brockton, MA. The funeral procession will gather at the funeral home Monday at 8am for a funeral mass at 9am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 433 West Street, Brockton. Burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery, 88 North Pearl Street, Brockton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity closest to John’s heart: The Mark Robert Boucher Memorial Fund at booshfund.org.
