Donald Gomes, 83, of New Bedford passed away Sunday August 6, 2023 at home surrounded by his family after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Carol (Mendes) Gomes.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late August and Julia “Teca” (Monteiro) Gomes, he lived in New Bedford all of his life. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School and Brown University.
Donald was formerly employed as a compliance officer for the City of New Bedford until his retirement.
He was extremely active in the community, having belonged to and volunteered for many area organizations. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1959-1963.
He is survived by his children, Desiree Martin, Carlos Martin and his wife Elizabeth, Donelle Gomes-Talley, and Deanne Gomes-Stanley; his brothers, Joseph Gomes and Paul Gomes; five grandchildren, Nancy Martin, Hope Martin, Cameron Stanley, Cellen Martin, and Hailey Stanley; two great-grandchildren, Jazlin Martin and Landon Sandillan; his brother-in-law and devoted caregiver, Robert Mendes; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Arthur Monteiro, Louise Ramos, August Gomes, Raymond Gomes, Catherine Texeira, Mary Ann Spinola, Anthony Gomes, and his twin, David Gomes, and his son-in-law, Terrence Talley.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday August 9th at 9 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
