Obituary

Carlotta Ann Krauth O’Brien of Winchester and Pocasset, formerly of Cambridge and Dedham, MA passed away peacefully on August 6, 2023, surrounded by her family. Carlotta was born December 6, 1930, the first child to Carl Henry Krauth and Lillian May Smith Krauth. She was born in Costa Rica where her parents, who worked for the United Fruit Company, had relocated after their marriage. There she attended elementary school at the Colegio de Sión, run by the Sisters of Sión who had a profound role in shaping her faith foundation and lifelong love of learning. She was older sister to Carl Henry Krauth Jr., who predeceased her on September 1st, 1991.

Carlotta attended high school at Dean Academy in Franklin, MA and received her bachelor’s degree from Regis College in Weston, MA, where she formed lifelong friendships and was senior sister to her future sister-in-law, Ann E. O’Brien O’Connor. She went on to receive her Master’s of Education at Boston University. She dedicated her career to teaching, predominantly Spanish and English, in elementary and high schools in Dedham, MA, Savannah, GA and Roslindale, MA. She married George Edward O’Brien Jr. in 1958 and together they raised four children. She put her teaching career on hold during the early family years and then returned to teaching until she retired at age 70.
Carlotta leaves behind her son George E. O’Brien III of Everett and three daughters and their spouses, Susan A. O’Brien Minear (Paul) of Melrose, Alison O’Brien Bayiates (Arthur) of Winchester and Sharon O’Brien Karadizian (Edward) of Winchester. She leaves grandchildren Lauren Karadizian Dupont, Christopher Bayiates, Lillian Bayiates, Ella Karadizian and Brien Karadizian and great grandchild, Leo Dupont. In addition, she leaves behind many friends and devoted family.
Carlotta was a woman of faith, which grounded her throughout her life and which she instilled in her family. She had the grace and depth of character that shone through to all who met her. She was a role model, a source of courage and beacon of hope for others. She will be greatly missed.

Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, August 9th from 6 to 8PM at Costello Funeral Home, Winchester, MA and again on Thursday morning at 9AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10AM in St. Mary Parish, Winchester. Interment will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
