Michael A. O’Brien, age 73, a 23-year resident of Winchester, passed away on August 6, 2023. He was the beloved husband for 47 years of Mary M. (McGinty) O’Brien.
Born in Weymouth, MA, Michael was the son of the late Paul H. and Margaret M. (Sumption) O’Brien. He was raised in Whitman and graduated from Whitman-Hanson Regional High School.
After high school, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served his country honorably.
Upon his discharge, he worked in maintenance at the U.S. Post Offices in Woburn and Reading. Michael was very active in the Winchester community. He was an elected member of Winchester Town Meeting for 16 years, taught CCD and was an usher at St. Mary’s Church, was a greeter at Winchester High School and served as Chairman of the Disability Access Commission. In his spare time, he maintained a huge sports memorabilia collection including autographed ticket stubs, hats, bats and jackets.
Michael is lovingly survived by his wife Mary, of Winchester, and a sister-in-law, Lynn O’Brien of Bridgewater. Two brothers, Peter and David O’Brien, predeceased him.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St, Winchester, on Friday, August 11, 2023, at 9:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at in St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester, at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
