Obituary

George Erwin Bodge
March 2, 1934 - August 1, 2023

STANDISH- Born to Mary-Ellen and Donald Bodge on March 2, 1934, George was the second of two children. He grew up in Westbrook, spending summers at his family camp, the Oakanpine, on Sebago Lake. George spent hours walking along Sandy Cove, greeting neighbors, looking for small beach treasures, and watching the water, which he continued to do all his life. George went on to serve his country in the Air Force, stationed in Holland, then returned home, settling down in Westbrook and raising three sons with his wife Gardy, Timothy, Thomas, and Daniel.

After George retired, he moved back to his favorite place - Sebago Lake, where he shared sunny days, happy hours, and memories with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as they each developed their own love for the lake. George spent the last 19 years surrounded by family after moving in with his son Daniel just a stone’s throw from the lake and his beloved Oakanpine, where they would often take boat rides, walk the beach, and make trips for morning coffee at his favorite local gas station. His family and friends will miss his daily walks on the camp road waving to neighbors picking up “road treasures” along the way and hanging them from the trees, his 4:00 pm happy hours, “snack attacks” filled with chocolate and cookies, endless weather reports, and his unyielding love of Sebago, where he opened Oakanpine for the enjoyment of so many over the years.

George is predeceased by his parents, his brother John, and his son Thomas. He is survived by his sons Timothy and Daniel (Mieka), grandchildren Amanda, Kiara, Alexandria, Thomas, Adrianna, Damian, and Calvin, and great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved very much.

A special thank you to the caregiver team at Beacon Hospice and the VA that assisted his family in carrying out his final wish to pass peacefully at home surrounded by his loved ones. And lifelong friends and family who reached out or came to see George in his final days.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday August 8th from 5 - 7 PM at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road (Rt. 22) in Buxton. Visiting hours will conclude at 7 PM with USAF Honors.
