In Loving Memory of John T. (Tom) Furey
TEWKSBURY - John T. (Tom) Furey, 93 passed away on July 28, 2023 surrounded by his loving
daughter and friends. He was the husband of 65 years to the late Gloria M. Furey (Boni), who passed
away on August 30, 2017.
Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, Tom was one of three children born to the late John J. and Katherine
(Sullivan) Furey, and his formative years were spent in Somerville before moving to Tewksbury in 1965.
His life was marked by service and dedication. In 1948, he enlisted in the Merchant Marines, then served
in Germany for the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Tom retired from the United States Postal Service in 1992 after years of service. He had also been a
devoted member of Local 25 Teamsters for over three decades. But beyond his professional
achievements, Tom's true passions laid in health and vitality. He embraced life to the fullest, finding
immense joy in scuba diving, running, skydiving at the age of 80, biking, skiing, playing frisbee, and even
partaking in the annual Polar Plunge on New Year's Day in South Boston, an adventure he kept alive
until his 92nd birthday. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he generously shared his zest for life with all
those who knew him.
He leaves three children, John R. Furey, Gail M. Johnson and her husband Bill, and the late Fay K. Furey;
five grandchildren, Sean P. Furey and his wife, Mattie, of Rhode Island, Ryan T. Furey and his wife, Anh-
Chi of California, Nicole M. Johnson and her fiancé Jensen Fitzgerald of California, Meagan E. Reilly and
her husband, Sean of California, and the late Kelly C. Johnson; four great- grandchildren, Matthan Furey ,
Bo Furey, Birdie Furey, and Kellen Furey; and many nieces and nephews. Tom created countless
cherished memories with his loved ones which will forever resonate in our hearts.
Tom was also a proud friend of Bill W. for over 54 years. Throughout his life, he remained steadfast in
his commitment to giving back and making a positive impact on the lives of others. His genuine
connections in the community extended beyond friendships; they became chosen family. Their
unwavering love and support served as a solid foundation for Tom, especially during the challenging
moments. Words fail to convey just how thankful we are for their presence in his life.
We would also like to express sincere gratitude to amazing staff at Merrimack Valley Hospice and the
David James Hospice Unit for the loving care that was provided to Tom over the past few years. You
made his days brighter and more comfortable, and for that we are very grateful.
While we mourn the loss of Tom, let us also celebrate the beautiful life he lived and the profound
influence he had on each of us. His memory will continue to inspire us as we strive to live with the same
compassion and joy that he always exemplified.
Although services are being held privately at this time, we will be planning a memorial service at a
later date to celebrate his remarkable journey. Rest in peace, Tom. You will be forever loved and
missed.
