Joyce Callaway Corry, 94, of Tifton passed away Monday, July 24, 2023, at her residence. Her funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2023, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. Mrs. Corry’s family members will give eulogies. Mrs. Corry will be laid to rest at a later date.
Born August 6, 1928, in Collins, Mrs. Corry was the daughter of the late Benjamin Josiah “B.J.” Callaway and Annie Callaway. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Frank Howard “Cutie” Corry, Jr.; one daughter, Janet “Jan” Corry; one son, Frank Howard Corry, III; and several brothers and sisters. She was a member of Tifton’s First Presbyterian Church.
Joyce grew up on a farm with her parents and 13 siblings. It is here that she learned from her father and family the nuances and skills of being a great teacher. She was a good student and athlete in high school and moved on to what is now Georgia Southern College and earned her teaching degree. G.O. Bailey from Tifton came looking for new teachers and Joyce was highly recommended and called a "natural" by her professors.
After moving to Tifton, Joyce met Frank "Cutie" Corry, Jr. They were married in 1951 and had three children, Jan, Frank, and Joe. Joyce took several years off from teaching to raise her young children. Joyce and Cutie's life was filled with joy, humor, and fun times. They were both golfers and enjoyed many golf trips with their numerous friends.
She resumed her teaching career and quickly built a well-deserved reputation for excellence among parents in Tifton. After retiring in the late 90s, she began avidly playing golf and was a very good player, recording six holes-in-one and a club championship.
When "Cutie" was suffering from Alzheimers, she dropped golf, and everything else, and stayed by his side until his death in 2005. Even in those two difficult years, she made life fun and interesting for both of them and rarely complained.
Joyce was selfless, kind, funny and always there for her family with words of encouragement and love.
R.I.P., Joyce! You are loved!
