Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 19, 2006, in the First Baptist Church Chapel for Mrs. Hattie O'Neal Emmett, age 81, of Jay Creek Road, Oakwood, Georgia. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in Tifton, Georgia, with Dr. W. Ches Smith, III officiating. The remains will lie in state at the Chapel of the First Baptist Church in Gainesville from 1:30 p.m. til 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 19, 2006.
Born in Brent, Alabama, Mrs. Emmett was the daughter of the late Samuel and Minnie Hicks O'Neal. She was a former resident of Tifton, Georgia for 24 years before moving to Gainesville in 1987. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tifton and also, while living in Gainesville, she was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville. She volunteered for a number of years in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and also, in Gainesville at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center and the Family Life Center at the First Baptist Church. Mrs. Emmett worked part-time at Frankie's Hallmark at the Colonial Lakeshore Mall in Gainesville. Mrs. Emmett is preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Prater Emmett, who died March 10, 1968.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law: Barbara Emmett Gilbert and Paul Gilbert of Gainesville; grandsons, David and Kyle Gilbert of Gainesville; and sister, Sarah Sullivan of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
There will be no visitation, but in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2565 Thompson Bridge Road, Suite 114, Gainesville, GA 30501; Third Century Bulding Fund or the Sanctuary Choir, both c/o the First Baptist Church of Gainesville, 751 Green Street, Gainesville, GA 30501, in memory of Mrs. Emmett.
Mason-Ward-Rogers Funeral Home in Gainesville is in charge of arrangements with Bowen-Donaldson assisting with local arrangements.
