Worcester – Edmund F. Dowd, 98, of Worcester and formerly of Auburn, passed away peacefully at the Health Center at the Willows on Friday, July 14, 2023.
Ed was born in Worcester, son of the late Edmund F. and Mabel F. (Macomber) Dowd. He is survived by a brother, Frederick Dowd, and his wife Kathy of Auburn; a sister, Patricia Dowd and her companion, Barbara Gallagher of Virginia and many nieces and nephews of whom he was close with.
Ed is predeceased by two brothers, Thomas F. Dowd Sr. and Francis Dowd; four sisters, Virginia Axton, Eileen Scopetski, Mary Dowd and Margaret Lovely. Upon his father’s passing, Ed took over the role of financially supporting his family at a young age by taking over the family tea and coffee business.
Mr. Dowd graduated from South High School Class of 1942 and served in the Merchant Marines. He worked for the former Thompson Steel Company as a foreman in the shipping and receiving department retiring after 30 years.
Ed was a lifelong member of Saint Peter’s Church where he volunteered in countless capacities including the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, The Men’s Club and the Food Pantry. He could often be found enjoying time on the golf course, playing the organ, doing swim workouts, and enjoying many hobbies but he was truly the happiest when he was spending time with his siblings, nieces and nephews.
We would like to thank the Willows and their professional staff in the Health Center for caring for Ed over the past 7 months. Ed enjoyed the companionship of his Willow neighbors Pauline, Lou and many others.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, July 18 from the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM in Saint Peter's Church 929 Main St. Burial will follow in Saint John’s Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home from 9 to 11 AM before the funeral. Memorial contributions in memory of Ed may be made to Saint Peter’s Church “Food Pantry” 929 Main St. Worcester, MA 01610.
