Longtime Provincetown resident, John G.D. Edwards, age 82, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, April 14, 2023 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis following an extended illness.
John was born on May 25 1940 in Panama Beach, FL. He was resided and grew up in Pelham, NY. Following his graduation from Pelham High School, John began his career in retail at a unique Greenwich Village NYC shop under the tutelage of importer and later business partner, Sam Hilu. During his business development in Sam’s Greenwich Village shop, John was immersed in the New York’s 1960’s “Theatre and Rock and Roll” scene drawn to their unique shop.
John moved to Provincetown, his forever home in the 1960’s opening Pier and Cargo on Commercial Street in the 1970’s. John was a Provincetown fixture and business man for over 40 years owning and running Pier Cargo. He loved everything about the town in every way - from its people to its unique history. John stands out and is remembered by anyone who ever met him for his personality and great heart.
John is predeceased in death by his son Carl J. Edwards, his parents Olivetta and Stanley Moore and his aunt Augusta Holloway. John is survived by his son Christopher J. O’Donnell and his brothers James Zimmerman, Kevin Sawyer, Richard Heidelmark as well as additional extended family and a plethora of friends.
In the family’s tradition, John’s life was celebrated and his ashes were spread at sea off of Race Point in Provincetown on Thursday May 25, 2023 following prayers attended by family and his closest friends.
