SCANNELL, Mary B. (Connell) was called to God the morning of July 13, 2023. Mary was the eldest child born in Boston to Thomas and Margaret (Heffernan) Connell on August 15, 1927. Her parents were born in County Galway, Ireland, but never met until a chance encounter at a Hibernian Hall dance in Boston many years later. Mary grew up in Jamaica Plain and attended Our Lady of Lourdes Grammar School and Mission High School. She met the love of her life, Jim, through her sister Peggy. Mary and Jim were married in 1952 at Mission Church. They started a family and settled in West Roxbury where they raised their six children and remained for the rest of their lives. After her children were of school age, Mary enjoyed working part-time at Decelle's Clothing Store where she made many long-lasting friendships. Mary was a devoted and loving mother who had a great sense of humor, something that came in handy raising six children. She was an active parishioner in St. Theresa Parish where she was a member of the Theresians for many years. After retirement, Mary and Jim traveled and spent much of their time with their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary is survived by her devoted children Marybeth McDonough (John) of Norwood, James III (Kathleen) of West Roxbury, Carol Raffoul (George) of West Roxbury, Julie MacIsaac of Milton, Thomas (Maureen) of West Roxbury and Michael (Susan) of West Roxbury. She will be missed by her 18 adoring grandchildren: John, Katie, Kristen, Meghan, Ryan, Erin, Tom, Matty, Brianne, Stephanie, Jillian, David, Mike, Corey, Griffin, Catherine, Joseph and James. She also leaves behind 15 (and counting) great-grandchildren and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, dear neighbors and friends. Mary was predeceased by her parents, her sister (and best friend) Peggy Smith, her brother John and her beloved husband of 63 years, Jim, who passed away in 2016. It will be a glorious reunion for all of them.
