Madeline A. McMahon (née Buckley) died unexpectedly at South Shore Hospital on Friday, July 7, 2023, surrounded by her family in prayer.
As her family and friends mourn our loss, we are comforted by our faith – a faith which Madeline lived out daily in her words and deeds.
She was a devoted wife, a loving sister, a caring mother, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the keeper of her family’s history; her ability to recall the finer details was legendary. She counted many friends from childhood, neighbors, co-workers, and members of her church. Madeline welcomed all with her huge smile and put people at ease with her conversation. She made you feel special through her uncanny recall of your favorite things and received great joy in having your favorite treat when she saw you.
Madeline was born in Somerville, the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth (née Coughlin) Buckley. She was the sister of the late Rev. Thomas Buckley of the Archdiocese of Boston and is survived by her brother John (Barbara) Buckley of Cotuit. She lived the first half of her life in Medford, moving to Abington after her marriage to the late William McMahon, then later to Whitman. She was an active parishioner of Holy Ghost Church, a member of the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and spent many hours each week in Eucharistic Adoration.
She is survived by her son, John (Mary Kate) Wade of Warminster, PA and her daughter, Madelaine (Micheal) Lombardo of Whitman. She was the proud grandmother (Nana) of Nora and Maggie Wade and of Mandy, Michael (Monica), and Thomas (Erin) Lombardo. She was the greatest great-grandmother (Lanana) to Madison Lombardo and Amelia Lombardo. In addition, she is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and friends.
Mother Teresa said, “Peace begins with a smile.” No one exemplified this belief better than Madeline. We take comfort in knowing that her example will live on in our hearts and in our smiles.
A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, July 16, 2023 from 4:00 -7:00 PM at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Family and friends are welcomed to join the family at the Blanchard Funeral Chapel at 9:45 AM, to gather in a procession to the Holy Ghost Church. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for Monday, July 17, at 10:30 AM and will take place at Holy Ghost Church, 555 Washington Street, Whitman. The Burial Service will take place at 1:30 PM at The Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Madeline’s memory to Holy Ghost Parish for the restoration of Father Glennon Hall, where she spent countless hours with her friends. (Please include Madeline’s name and/or “Fr. Glennon Hall” in the check memo.)
