John J. McDevitt, Jr., 71, of Chopmist Hill Road, Scituate, RI died Friday, July 7, 2023 at his home with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of Linda E. (Moore) McDevitt. They had been married for 23 years.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John J. and Martha A. (Jaswell) McDevitt. He had lived in Scituate for the past 30 years.
John served in the United States Air Force and was a Pawtucket Firefighter for 17 years before retiring in 1985 as a Captain. He later was a volunteer EMT and Cardiac Instructor for the former Scituate Ambulance Corporation. He was part of the Rambone Family for many years, working at Rambone and Sprague. John had such a love and passion for cars. He spent most of his time at the garage working on cars with his buddy Dave and heading to the track for race weekends.
John was strong willed and stubborn at times, but he also had an enormous heart and wonderful sense of humor. He was generous, loyal and brave. He was clever and full to the brim with knowledge gained though all of his life experiences.
Besides his wife, John is survived by his son, John J. McDevitt, III of Seekonk, MA, and his four daughters: Jennifer (McDevitt) Barishian of Seekonk, MA, Ashley Valentine of North Scituate, Crystal Valentine of North Providence and Holly Kurshner of Johnston, his grandchildren: Brandon and Christian Cardinal, John Michael McDevitt, Savannah Barishian, Jared Barishian, Jayson and Jordan Goddard, Aiden Barishian, Madison Leonard and Meadow McDevitt as well as a brother, Kenneth McDevitt and god daughter, Maegen Beckhorn. He was the brother of the late Michael and Daniel McDevitt.
His funeral service will be held Friday at 11:30am in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Visitation will be Friday morning, 9:30 to 11:30am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations donations in his memory may be made to RI ASPCA.
