In loving memory of Rosaleen McGowan Walsh
(July 14, 1933-July 1, 2023).
Rosaleen Walsh, a devoted wife, loving mother, beloved grandmother, compassionate nurse and committed volunteer, passed away peacefully in Cambridge, MA. Born in Glencar, Ireland, one of thirteen children, she embarked on a remarkable journey that touched the lives of many.
After graduating from nursing school at St. Chad's Hospital in Birmingham, England, Rosaleen and friends left for an overseas trip that began in New York City. It was there where she met the love of her life, William Walsh, (pre-deceased) and her plans to continue traveling changed.
Bill and Rosaleen were married on February 22, 1963, and within the year welcomed the first of six children. Together, they made a beautiful life on the Main Line outside Philadelphia. Rosaleen poured her love, wisdom, and nurturing spirit into shaping her children's lives, providing them with a strong foundation and steadfast support. Rosaleen was passionate about tennis and golf and an equestrian enthusiast, imbuing these loves into her children and grandchildren. She was a tremendous hostess opening her house to family and friends and causes dear to her.
Rosaleen's selflessness and generosity were exhibited through her many philanthropic endeavors. Bill and Rosaleen retired to Warrenton, N.C., where she was actively involved in economic development for Preservation Warrenton and in Habitat for Humanity. Her love of the arts was apparent through her work with the National Humanities Center in North Carolina. She relocated to New York City after Bill’s passing and continued her support of the arts with the National Arts Club in New York City. Her presence at, and generosity to, Columbia University in New York City was unwavering.
Rosaleen's love and dedication was most evident when it came to her six children, Holly Daniel (Royal), Lawrence Walsh (Kathleen), William Walsh (Elizabeth), Eamon Walsh (Christine), Jonathan Walsh (Dawn), Fiona Walsh and fourteen grandchildren who loved her tremendously. Her thoughtfulness, encouragement, and compassion profoundly influenced their lives.
She is survived by her sister Bernadette Banks, her sister-in-law Eileen McGowan and
two brother-in-laws: Thomas Fallon and James Banks.
May her soul find eternal peace.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in her memory to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception or the National Humanities Center.
