Obituary

DUDLEY – Hazel M. (Arel) Grzyb, 92 died Tuesday, July 4, 2023 in Overlook Masonic Health Care after a period of declining health.

She leaves her husband of 67 years, Stanley M. Grzyb; 4 children, Susan L. Grzyb of Dudley, Sharon A. Basso and her husband Keith of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Robert A. Grzyb of Webster, and Bruce M. Grzyb and his wife Michele of Dudley; 3 grandchildren, Adam and Brandon Grzyb, and Delaney Basso; a sister, Susan Greenberg and her husband Robert of Manhattan Beach, CA; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Maurice “Mo” Arel and Raymond Arel, and by 3 sisters, Marjorie Standrowicz, Lillian Sarasin and Carolyn LeBoeuf.

She was born on December 28, 1930 in Sheldon Springs, VT and raised there, the daughter of Stewart and Cecilia (Demar) Arel. She moved to Southbridge when she was 10 years old and then to Webster in 1956. She lived in Dudley for 60 years. She graduated from Saint Mary’s High School in 1948.

Mrs. Grzyb first worked as a machine operator at the American Optical Company in Southbridge. She then worked as an assistant cook and baker at Shepherd Hill Regional High School for 21 years, retiring in 1994.

Hazel was a member of Saint Andrew Bobola Church and the former Saint Joseph Polish Women’s Club. She liked to cook, sew, quilt, and play the organ. She volunteered at festivals and at the weekly bingo at the church. She loved traveling, playing bingo and polka dancing. Her family was her life.

Her funeral will be held on Saturday, July 15 at 11:00 AM in Saint Andrew Bobola Church, 54 West Main Street. Burial will be private. Arrangements are under the direction of Sitkowski, Malboeuf & Hickey Funeral Home, 340 School Street, Webster.
