Obituary

Richard W. Hughes, 98, of Anderson passed away at Countryside Manor on June 30, 2023 surrounded by his family.

He was born on November 13, 1924 in Elwood, IN to Wayne and Bessie (McElfresh) Hughes. He graduated in 1942 from Elwood High School where he played football and was active in the band where he played the trombone . He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He was a tool & die maker at Guide Lamp for 40 years and retired in 1987.

He was a member of Parkview Church of the Nazarene and enjoyed singing in the choir. He came from a very musical family and enjoyed singing. He was an avid bowler. He enjoyed 40 years on Lake Tippecanoe and was an avid water-skier and taught many people how to water-ski over the years. He slalomed skied up until he was 90 years old. He loved playing euchre with his family and friends and enjoyed birdwatching.

He is survived by his three children, David Hughes and Rhonda (Rex) Garringer all of Anderson; Sharla (Jay) Purciful of Tennessee; a daughter-in-law, Linda Hughes of Hot Springs, Arkansas; five siblings, Evelyn Hight, Janet Stanley, and Marilyn Preston all of Bradenton, FL; Jack Hughes of Kansas; and Victoria Kester of Ormond Beach, FL; 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna (Couch) Hughes on April 22, 2002 whom he lovingly cared for 15 years; two children, Karen Hook and Michael Hughes; four siblings, Helen McDonald, Nelle Mosier, Raymond Hughes, and Clara Richman; and a grandson, Aaron David Purciful.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 11, 2023 at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service with Pastors Jason Hawk and Dan Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at East Maplewood Cemetery with military honors.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00am - 2:00pm at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be given to American Cancer Society or American Diabetes Association.
