Derek Tod Thoele, of San Luis Obispo, passed away unexpectedly on June 25, 2023. He was 33 years old.
Derek was born and raised in Ventura, CA, to parents Tod and Claire Thoele. A 2007 graduate of Foothill Technology High School, he went on to earn a BS degree from the College of Engineering at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. It was there that he met some of his closest, and dearest friends.
Derek had a strong work ethic and was a dedicated employee at Cannon Corporation in San Luis Obispo, where he worked as a mechanical engineer. His coworkers described him as "inspirational" and said he was admired by both his colleagues and clients.
From an early age, Derek was drawn to nature and the outdoors. He was an avid hiker and passionate surfer, being drawn to the ocean before he could walk.
Though he studied science and engineering, Derek had an artistic side that showed itself whenever he picked up his guitar. Self-taught, Derek played with the sensitivity and spirit of a true musician, and his playing enriched many a family get together.
Having recently recommitted to his Catholic faith, Derek was so proud to be chosen as godfather to his nephew Joey. He was the best uncle, a dutiful son, devoted brother, cherished nephew, and generous friend.
Sweet, gentle, and kind hearted, Derek touched the lives of all who knew and loved him. He will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his love of life, and his dry sense of humor. Our hearts are broken and we shall miss him.
In addition to his parents, Derek is survived by his sister Kyla (Matt) Dies, brother
Dylan, grandmother Winnie, numerous aunts, uncle, and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Assumption Church (3175 Telegraph Rd, Ventura) on Friday, July 7th, at one o'clock in the afternoon.
