John J. "Jack" Carreiro, 74, of Dartmouth, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 24, 2023 at Massachusetts General Hospital with his family by his side. He was the companion of Joanne T. Horn.
Mr. Carreiro was born in New Bedford, son of the late Joseph J. and Emily W. (Dillion) Carreiro and had been a resident of Manhattan, NY before relocating to Dartmouth. He was a 1967 graduate of Bishop Stang High School and attended the Cardinal O'Connell Seminary, now known as St. John's Seminary in Brighton, MA. He was a 1972 graduate of SMU and was the feature editor of the school newspaper "The Torch" where he was involved in reporting political action and news stories and parlayed his baritone voice into a stint as a local radio DJ. Prior to retirement, he worked as a paramedic for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) Station 10 in Manhattan for over 27 years. He was a member of and a trustee and delegate of Local 2507, NY. He was a member of Local 3621, NY and when he became a Lieutenant, was also a delegate. It was in these years where he took care of those who were in their most desperate hours, saved numerous lives and helped organize and respond to the tragic events of 9/11. In 27 years he was proud to stake claim to the fact that “No one ever dies in my ambulance. Ever.” And they never did.
Jack will always be remembered for his profound dedication to his profession, his love of knowledge, cooking, aviation and music as well as his unique sense of humor which he was able to not only maintain, but even showcase, in his final days.
Survivors along with his companion include his son: Justin Carreiro and his wife Samantha of Reading, MA; his daughter: Katherine "Cassie" Donges and her husband Andrew of Burlington, VT; his brother: Richard D. Carreiro and his companion Jacqueline of CA; his sister: Cheryl Ann Pacheco and her fiancé Richard James of New Bedford; 6 grandchildren: Camden, Scarlett, Brennan, Isabelle, Dash and Chase; his former wife: Virginia "Dinny" (Semmes) Carreiro of Burlington, VT; along with many nieces and nephews.
